Student Assistant (f/m/x)

For its Institutions and Political Inequality Unit (IPI), the Berlin Social Science Center (WZB) is looking for
a Student Assistant (f/m/x)
on a temporary basis, initially from 01 March 2022 to 31 August 2022, for up to 15 hours per week.
The WZB Berlin Social Science Center is a publicly financed research institution that conducts leading edge theory-based and problem-oriented social science research ( WZB researchers come from across the globe and work across social science disciplines including sociology, political science, economics, law, and psychology. A member of the Leibniz Association, WZB’s research is directed at the science community, policy makers, the media and the general public.

The unit’s research focuses on the experimental and otherwise quantitative study of the political economy of inequality and informal institutions. The successful applicant will work in a dynamic research environment with scholars from Germany, Ireland, Romania, Russia, and the United States.
The student assistant will primarily work for research projects led by one researcher of the unit (Lisa Garbe, Ph.D.), including work on observational measurement of internet censorship and shutdowns in African countries, and on the political effects of government censorship. The student assistant may also work on research conducted by other members of the research department, such as large-scale survey experiments about inequality.
Your tasks and duties
The student assistant will support the researcher(s) in the research projects. Duties will include data management and statistical analyses of cross-national data of censorship and other kinds of data formats, such as survey experimental data, literature searches, the creation of data graphics, assistance with the presentation of quantitative material, and other routine office tasks.
Your qualifications profile
  • Advanced Bachelor or a Master student in social sciences, economics, data science, statistics, or related subjects
  • Excellent knowledge of the English language (the working language of the research unit is English)
  • Training in and experience with statistical methods and excellent R skills
  • Experienced in working with advanced regression models and their visualization
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Competent handling of MS Office applications
  • Desirable: experience with other programming languages (e.g. Python) and web scraping
