East India Company
India office records from the British Library, 1595- 1947
Annotation: - German-wide access provided by the DFG
Research area: History Language: English The East India Company, also known as English East India Company, and officially known as "Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies" from 1600 - 1708 and "United Company of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies" from 1708 - 1873 respectively, was an English company that came into being in 1600 by a charter from Queen Elizabeth I. It pursued the goal of intensifying trade with East and South East Asia. The company's business flourished in the 18th century and the East India Company was responsible for almost half of the world's trade. As a representative of British imperialism, it gained significant influence on the political conditions in India from the beginning of the 18th to the middle of the 19th century. In addition, the East India Company acted as a catalyst for British expansion in China in the 19th century. The East India Company was granted unprecedented powers - providing armies, buying land, minting coins and prosecuting the inhabitants of the Dominions. In the 19th century, the East India Company was severely shaken by scandals, diplomatic crises, riots and wars, but at that time it also dominated the tea and opium trade with China. After the suppression of the Indian uprising of 1857, the rights of the Company were transferred to the British Crown before India became independent in 1947. The Adam Matthew Publications database, with documents such as Royal Charter Letters, correspondence, trade books, council minutes and expedition reports, gives an insight into the history of the first great multinational company, British imperialism, maritime trade and global commerce. The collection is expected to contain over 1.2 million pages of original documents from the India Office Records, which are stored in the British Library, when it is completed in 2019. These are regarded as the most important archive for research on the British East India Company (EIC). East India Company is divided into the following three modules: I: Trade, Governance and Empire, 1600 - 1947 II and III: Factory Records for South Asia, South East Asia, China, Japan and the Middle East (1595 - 1870) -
